All praise be to Allah for His guidance as we make our way back from the splendid South Africa, following the leadership of the 12th international volunteer trip under the INSPIRE program. This journey brought together an exceptional team of Canadian youth with a passion for community initiatives.
The trip was filled with volunteer activities, community initiatives, adventurous explorations, and insights into the landmarks and history of this beautiful country, including the struggles of Mandela and his comrades. It provided a wonderful opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rich culture of Cape Town and the enchanting city of Durban, following a previous visit to Johannesburg.
Moreover, it was a chance to witness the progress and resilience of this nation, despite the persisting socioeconomic disparities and crime rates in certain areas. Working alongside fellow travelers, I had the privilege of meeting dozens of new friends and learning about the contributions of Muslim heroes from India, Indonesia, and Malaysia, who were brought to South Africa as slaves centuries ago and played a significant role in spreading Islam from their exile through clever and innovative means.
During this journey, I also had the opportunity to visit the cell where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years in solitary confinement on Robben Island before being transferred to a prison in Johannesburg. Meeting one of Mandela’s comrades who shared insights into their struggle against colonialism and the conditions of the prison during that period was deeply enlightening. It highlighted the stark contrast between historical injustices and the relatively humane conditions of that prison compared to contemporary prisons in some Arab countries.
Anticipating a long flight back from a fulfilling humanitarian trip in South Africa, I’m filled with excitement at the thought of reuniting with my beloved family in Canada. This journey has invigorated me with a renewed sense of purpose and dedication, and I can’t wait to share my experiences and embrace the warmth of home once again..
