Today, on World Refugee Day, I reflect upon the incredible strength and resilience of the millions of individuals around the world who have been forced to leave their homes due to conflict and persecution. As a humanitarian professional, I have had the honor of working closely with refugees, witnessing both their immense suffering and their remarkable achievements. It is with immense gratitude and pride that I share one of the most memorable events I organized to celebrate the WRD with refugees, it was in Lebanon back in 2016, in collaboration with IRW.
In the heart of Lebanon, we came together with refugees and members of the host community to celebrate the spirit of unity and resilience. One of the highlights was a vibrant football tournament, where teams from refugee camps and local charitable organizations came together, not only to compete but also to foster a sense of camaraderie and friendship. The football field transformed into a symbol of hope, where boundaries blurred, and people united through the universal language of sport. It was truly inspiring to witness the power of teamwork and the joy that filled the air.
Additionally, we organized a grand Ramadan iftar, bringing together approximately 1000 refugees from the Ouzai camp in Saida and members of the host community. The iftar was a feast of generosity and compassion, where people from different backgrounds, cultures, and religions shared a moment of togetherness and understanding.
I also have been blessed to have other meaningful experiences working with refugees in Tunisia and the incredible journey with the Inspire volunteer abroad program, serving refugees in diverse locations around the world. From supporting Rohingya refugees in Malaysia to assisting Syrian and Uyghur refugees in Istanbul, and working alongside Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.
These events served as reminders that while refugees may face unimaginable challenges, they also possess incredible resilience, strength, and a capacity to thrive in the face of adversity. Their stories and achievements are a testament to the indomitable human spirit.
Today, let us not only celebrate the achievements of refugees but also acknowledge the immense contributions they make to our communities and societies. Let us recognize their talents, skills, and aspirations, which enrich the fabric of our shared humanity. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that refugees are provided with the support, protection, and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives and fulfill their potential.
On this World Refugee Day, I extend my deepest gratitude to all the individuals, organizations, and communities who continue to work tirelessly to support refugees worldwide. Together, we can create a world where every refugee is embraced with empathy, compassion, and dignity.
