Since my youth, I have embraced the Scout’s oath as a guiding principle in my life: “To do my duty to God, to help others, and to live by the Scout Law.” These words have resonated within me since my early days as a Cub Scout in the early 1980s.
Growing up within the framework of the scouting organization instilled in me a deep sense of community service, altruism, and selflessness. It taught me the value of effort, volunteerism, and initiative through engaging and enjoyable educational methods.
As I pursued my career as an engineer and later as a university lecturer, I sought to impart these principles to my students and young people around me. I found a platform for enlightenment and positive thinking among the university’s youth, particularly within the ranks of the Scouts.
One memorable instance occurred in October 2009 when the city of Redaif, a mining town in southwestern Tunisia, was devastated by severe floods. In response, a group of 100 dedicated young volunteers from distinguished scouting leaders rallied to assist their community. Together, they embarked on a mission to aid the flood victims, restoring homes and reviving spirits through acts of kindness and solidarity.
The spirit of solidarity extended beyond our borders, welcoming hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the turmoil of the 2011 Libyan revolution. Tunisia’s compassionate response, characterized by a wave of solidarity and generosity, laid the foundation for numerous humanitarian projects and initiatives.
Similarly, during the harsh winter of 2012, the northwestern regions of Tunisia faced floods, snowstorms, and bitter cold. Relief convoys from across the country opened shelters and provided support to affected families, offering hope and comfort during trying times.
In the face of adversity, vulnerable groups such as orphans, widows, and people with disabilities found solace and assistance in humanitarian organizations. These organizations served as beacons of compassion, offering aid, mercy, and hope to those in need.
Yet, amidst these acts of kindness and solidarity, a stark reality persists. Certain individuals, blinded by greed and malice, seek to undermine the efforts of humanitarian organizations and impede progress. They wield their influence to hinder noble initiatives and tarnish the reputation of those dedicated to serving others.
It is disheartening to witness the prevalence of corruption and indifference in our society, where the forces of construction and destruction vie for dominance. However, I remain hopeful that through dialogue and concerted action, we can overcome these challenges and build a more inclusive society.
If we truly aspire to bring about meaningful change and foster a healthier community, we must unite in our commitment to a common societal covenant. Together, let us elevate discourse, champion compassion, and work towards a brighter future for all.
In conclusion, let us heed the call to duty not as passive observers but as active participants in the ongoing narrative of humanity. Together, we can make a difference, one act of kindness at a time.
