Gratitude fills my heart as I reflect on the completion of yet another enriching journey to one of my favorite cities in Canada – Edmonton, Alberta. Here, amidst dear friends, beautiful surroundings, and a vibrant Muslim community, I found solace and witnessed great achievements.
Edmonton, located in western Canada, holds a special place in my heart. It’s a city where friendships are forged, and where the Muslim community thrives, contributing significantly to the social fabric of the region. During this remarkable journey, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with dozens of friends whom I’ve traveled with to various destinations such as Malaysia, Kenya, Bosnia, South Africa, Turkey, Lebanon, and Tunisia. Together, we shared moments of camaraderie during these blessed days of Ramadan.
One of the highlights of my visit was being a guest at the Al-Rashid Mosque, the first mosque built in North America in 1938. Today, it stands as a beacon of faith, knowledge, social and cultural activity, and a meeting point for the Canadian Muslim community and scholars from around the world. It was an honor to attend lectures by the esteemed scholar, Dr. Amjad Qourshah, whose insights continue to inspire.
Staying in close proximity to the mosque allowed me to immerse myself in the Ramadan atmosphere, filled with prayers in congregation, Quranic lessons, lectures, daily charity iftars, Ramadan competitions, sports events, activities for children and women, and recreational spaces surrounding the mosque. Additionally, there are numerous apartments rented out to Muslims, with proceeds contributing to the mosque and its various institutions, including the Islamic Academy, renowned for providing excellent elementary and secondary education to over two thousand students in Alberta.
During this visit, we also participated in a fundraising campaign for the expansion of the mosque and school. In less than an hour, over 3.5 million Canadian dollars were raised, showcasing the generosity and commitment of the community towards the future of its children and the preservation of its faith. Blessings upon this community that honors Islam and shapes the future of its descendants! With this beautiful visit, the Ramadan marathon of visits concluded, spanning over eight cities in four Canadian provinces, attending more than a dozen Ramadan iftars and charitable events, where I had the privilege of meeting hundreds of beloved individuals in this beautiful, cold yet warm-hearted country. As I bid farewell to Edmonton, I carry with me cherished memories and a renewed sense of faith and community. Until we meet again, may Allah continue to shower His blessings upon this city and its residents.
