Journey to the Maritimes: From Halifax to St. John’s

Once again, I had the privilege of visiting the beautiful city of Halifax in Nova Scotia, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. I was delighted to meet both old and new friends and colleagues during my brief stay. I experienced the serene and spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan, witnessing a united and vibrant Muslim community. Mosques were bustling with worshippers, and communal iftars and special solidarity events in support of Gaza were highlights of my time there. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the beloved residents of this wonderful city and look forward to meeting again soon, God willing.
During the same trip, I scheduled a one-day visit to the enchanting city of St. John’s in Newfoundland, another province along the Atlantic coast. St. John’s is steeped in a rich tapestry of history, culture, and diversity that I noticed from the moment I arrived. Founded in 1497 by the Italian explorer John Cabot, the city has played a pivotal role in Canada’s maritime history, serving as a vibrant hub for trade and exploration.
St. John’s boasts a diverse community, with a majority of its inhabitants having Scottish and Irish roots, alongside Indigenous peoples and immigrants from various backgrounds.

What makes St. John’s particularly attractive to migrants from diverse backgrounds is its welcoming atmosphere and relatively easy immigration procedures compared to other Canadian provinces. Moreover, the city offers reduced tuition fees for foreign students compared to other universities, making it an appealing destination for international students seeking higher education opportunities.

One of the most intriguing aspects of St. John’s is its vibrant Muslim community, despite being relatively small. Muslims in St. John’s have made significant contributions to the social, economic, and cultural fabric of the city, from business ventures to social initiatives.

During my visit, I had the pleasure of meeting my Palestinian friend, Dr. Moein, who graciously served as my guide and host. He introduced me to community leaders and educational and social programs organized at the city’s mosque, which serves as a beacon of knowledge and refuge for those in need of support and guidance. Additionally, I attended the special Ramadan prayers and activities at Memorial University’’s chapel, further enriching my experience.

It’s a beautiful feeling to travel across different corners of the world and encounter unknown personalities who devote themselves to serving their faith and community. We can only trust that God utilizes and preserves us for His greater purpose, wherever we may be. May we continue to seek His guidance and benefit others wherever we go.
